New forms of media publishing

According to the research done by IDC, people now spend twice as much time surfing the Web as they do watching TV. It shows that internet is the medium on which users spend the most time which are 32.7 hours per week, as compare to magazines which is 3.9 hours (Lewin J, 2008). In this case, it shows that people today are engaging themselves with high technology to obtain their information.

Firstly, YouTube had become a powerful tool for media publishing where allows user to upload video clips of TV shows, films and music videos. However there it might rise up the copyright issue between the publishing companies. In the year 2007, a group of music publishers had joined a class action lawsuit filed against YouTube on the video sharing issues (Sandoval G, 2011).

Besides that, the explosion in social media over the past couple years resulted many of the international brands are getting attention of their core demographics on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. According to Philip Keightley, traditional publishing world has suffered audience decline through the increased competition offered by a fragmenting media market (Keightley P, 2010). Hence, it results that the new forms of media publishing has altered the communication in a new media ecosystem.

Next, iPad had made a change in the new media ecosystem by making entries for magazine and newspaper to enter the new ecosystem with their applications which differs to the traditional media that are created by hierarchical organizations that are built for commerce. A new media ecosystem refers to online communities that discuss and extend the stories created by mainstream media (Lasica, 2003). Besides that, it allows publisher to save their distribution cost by engaging themselves in the world of internet (Alveras, 2010).
